FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team suffered a pair of losses to Saint Peter's College this afternoon in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Alumni Diamond. The Peacocks (15-14, 5-3 MAAC) took the first game by a score of 8-1 and then edged the Stags (6-15, 4-4 MAAC) by a margin of 4-2.

Fairfield got on the board first in the opening game, as sophomore Dave Jermine (North Haven, Conn.) crossed the plate on a double by junior Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y.). Saint Peter's responded in the top of the second inning by plating four runs on five hits off of starter Ryan Calabrese (Wantagh, N.Y.). The Peacocks added a run in the fourth inning and tacked on three more in the top of the sixth to set the score at 8-1.

Calabrese (2-4) was tagged with the loss, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on 10 hits, while striking out two batters in five and two-thirds innings of work. Sophomore Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J.) pitched three and one-third scoreless innings of relief allowing just three hits. Saint Peter's Eric Miksitz went six and one-third innings allowing just one run on four hits with six strikeouts in the win.

The Stags came out strong in the second game, pushing two runs across the plate in the bottom of the second inning. Allen opened the frame with a double down the right field line and came around to score on a double by sophomore Dave Brizzolara (Norwood, N.J). Junior Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y) then delivered a single to left field to bring home Brizzolara and give the Stags a 2-0 lead.

The Peacocks answered in the top of the third inning. With one out, Dennis Alexander singled through the right side to plate Andy Case and Wayne Guarino and tie the game at 2-2. One batter later, Michael McGuire singled up the middle to score Alexander and give the Peacocks a 3-2 advantage. Saint Peter's added an insurance run in the top of the fifth inning on a solo homerun by McGuire. The Stags threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning by putting runners on second and third with one out but were unable to score.

Freshman Rob Gariano (Nutley, N.J.) picked up his fourth loss of the season, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits along with four strikeouts in five innings of work. Freshman Dan Urbanovich (Nutley, N.J.) tossed two scoreless innings of relief striking out three batters while giving up just two hits. The Peacocks' Santo Maertz earned his first win of the year going three and two-thirds innings allowing one earned run on three hits along with five strikeouts.

Allen finished the day a combined 3-for-7 with an RBI and a run scored for the Stags. Alexander had a solid afternoon going 4-for-8 with two RBI and two runs scored. Maertz, who was the designated hitting in game one, went 3-for-5 with a run scored.

Fairfield concludes the series with Saint Peter's on April 9 at 1 p.m. on Alumni Diamond.
