SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Steve Tyburski (Feasterville, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) pitched seven and one-third innings of work, to earn his first win of the 2005 season, as the Fairfield University baseball team defeated Le Moyne College, 10-3 in the first game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Dick Rockwell Field, Saturday afternoon. However, Le Moyne came back to take the nightcap, 17-0.
Tyburski (1-3) gave up three runs, only one earned, on five hits and three walks, while striking out four, to give the Fairfield (6-17, 4-4 MAAC) starting pitchers, another quality MAAC start. Junior Dan Breen (Troy, N.Y./Troy) pitched the final one and two-thirds innings giving up no runs on one hit, and two strikeouts.
Le Moyne (10-9, 5-1 MAAC) scored the first run of the first game, of the afternoon, in the bottom of the second inning as Robert Perez grounded out to short, scoring Andre Enriquez, who led the inning off with a single through the left-side of the Fairfield infield.
But, Fairfield added a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, as junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) singled and advanced to second on an error, plating sophomore Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./St. Joseph's) who doubled, and senior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) who reached on an error.
After Le Moyne put a run of the board in the bottom of the third inning, the Stags added another pair of runs in the fourth. Soucy ripped a two-RBI single up the middle bringing in freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) who reached base after getting hit by a pitch and junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia), who led the inning off with a double, which was his ninth this season.
Fairfield came to the plate in the top of the fifth, and scored four runs on five hits and one error to make it 8-2. Scaife had his second RBI of the first game, with a single to right field, bringing in junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton).
Then sophomore Steve Rybak (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Seton Hall), singled, and went to second when the Le Moyne right fielder, misplayed the ball, which allowed Rudolph and Scaife to score. The very next batter, junior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) doubled scoring Rybak, and chasing Le Moyne starter Bobby Blevins who gave up eight runs on nine hits in four and two-thirds innings of work.
Le Moyne added a run in the home half of the fifth inning, when Aaron Buckley tripled to centerfield, driving in Ben Gaal who drew a one-out walk.
Fairfield scored two more times in the top of the ninth, as Rudolph stroked a two-run double to right centerfield, as Scaife and Anderson rounded the bases to score.
Scaife finished the first game of the day with a pair of hits, and three runs scored, while driving in one run. Rudolph also collected two hits, as he scored two runs, and drove in two RBI. Rybak went 2-for-4 with a run, and two RBI.
In the process, the Stags halted Le Moyne's six-game winning streak, and its own 10-game losing streak to the Dolphins.
In the nightcap, four Dolphins homered and T.J. Sheridan extended his streak without an earned run to 20 innings, as Le Moyne won 17-0. Sheridan struck out eight Stags and allowed only three hits over six innings for his third win of the season.
Fairfield was forced to use four pitchers, as senior Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) lasted only two and one-third innings, after giving up 10 runs on 10 hits. Dugan (2-3) was relieved by sophomore Michael Colucci (Pelham, N.Y./St. Peter's Prep) who gave up one run on three hits and three walked in two and two-thirds innings.
Senior Mark Geanuleas (Huntington Valley, Pa./Academy of the New Church), Anderson, Rudolph, and Soucy were the only Fairfield hitters with hits in the second game of the afternoon. Rudolph collected his 13th double of the season, which is tops in the MAAC.
The teams will play the rubber-game of the MAAC series on Sunday afternoon at Alliance Bank Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y., which is the home of the Toronto Blue Jays Triple-A affiliate the Syracuse SkyChiefs.
The game will be televised live on Time Warner Sports 26 throughout the Central and Northern New York areas. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
