Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sophomore Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) finished the afternoon batting 3-for-7 with two doubles and two runs scored, in both ends of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader against Rider University on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. Rider took the first game, 7-3, and the nightcap, 6-2.
The first game started out a pitcher's dual until the bottom of the third inning, when senior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) lofted a sacrifice fly to plate sophomore Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City).
But Rider (10-19, 5-3 MAAC) put four runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning, thanks four hits and a sacrifice fly.
In the home half of the fourth, Fairfield (8-16, 4-4 MAAC) got two runs back, as Allen singled to right centerfield. Then sophomore Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) drew a walk to put runners on first and second.
That brought sophomore Tyler Birrittella (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) to the plate, and he smacked an RBI double to plate Allen. Chilelli then singled bringing in DeSimone, but Birrittella was thrown out at the plate on a relay throw.
Rider would put one more run on the board in the seventh, and two more in the ninth, to make it 7-3.
Will O'Connor picked up his third win for the Broncs. O'Connor (3-0) gave up three runs on nine hits and two walks in seven and two-thirds innings. Junior Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) took the loss for the Stags. Kamintzky (2-3) gave up four earned runs in eight innings of work. He did strikeout five batters.
Birrittella finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Allen was also 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Anderson was 1-for-3 with a run batted in.
In the nightcap, Rider's Jim Kennedy pitched a complete-game five-hitter en route to the win. Kennedy (3-2) struck out eight while allowing only two runs and two walks. Fairfield's Paul DeMarco (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Duke University) was tagged with the loss, as he gave up six runs on seven hits, while striking out three batters.
Rider scored two runs in the first, fourth, and fifth innings. The Stags put two runs on the board in the fourth inning. With two outs, senior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) singled to left centerfield. Then Allen roped a double to left, and senior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) drew a walk to load the bases. Chilelli would come through in the clutch again, as his single to right, brought home Arpino and Allen. But a strikeout would end the Stags rally.
The series will conclude on Monday afternoon with a nine-inning game beginning at 12 p.m. on Alumni Diamond.
