SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Fairfield University baseball team was edged in the rubber-game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series, 9-6, at Le Moyne College on Sunday afternoon, at Alliance Bank Stadium. Le Moyne's Andre Enriquez knocked in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Le Moyne (11-9, 6-1 MAAC) scored the first run of the afternoon in the bottom of the first inning, when Brian Hansen roped a RBI-single to centerfield, to bring in Aaron Buckley who had a leadoff single.
The game would remain that way until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Dolphins added another run on a RBI single by Jamie Rose.
Fairfield (6-18, 4-5 MAAC) scored its first run of the afternoon in the top of the fifth inning, when sophomore Steve Rybak (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Seton Hall) smacked a single to right centerfield to score junior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) who had his seventh double of the season.
In the sixth, the Stags would do most of their damage, scoring five runs on four hits and an error to take a 6-2 lead. After junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) singled, and junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) was hit by a pitch, junior John Scaife's fielder's choice scored Girolamo.
Then freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) singled through the left side of the infield to bring home Anderson. Arpino drew a walk to load the bases. Then after a fielder's choice, that retired Scaife at the plate, Rybak ripped a double down the right field line scoring Arpino and Rudolph.
Fairfield was not done, as freshman Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) laced a RBI single to center, to score senior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), on the play, Rybak was out at home with a throw from the Le Moyne centerfielder.
Le Moyne would add runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, to trail only 6-4, heading into the eighth inning, where the Dolphins scored five runs on seven hits. Cory O'Neill and Robert Perez led the inning off with back-to-back singles. Michael Falasca bunted them into scoring position, and Bulkey drove in O'Neill with the first of five consecutive singles.
Keith Connors singled through the right side to score Perez and tie the game at 6-6. Enriquez followed with a single to score Bulkey. Andy Parrino knocked Connors and Enriquez in, to make it 9-6.
Fairfield starter sophomore Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) gave up four runs on nine hits and a walk, while striking out five. Junior Dan Breen (Troy, N.Y./Troy) was tagged with the loss, after giving up four runs on five hits and a walk in one inning of work. Sophomore Michael Colucci (Pelham, N.Y./St. Peter's Prep) pitched the final two-thirds of an inning giving up one run on three hits.
Rybak went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in, and Girolamo finished the afternoon with a pair of hits and a run scored. Arpino went 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Fairfield is back in action on Tuesday afternoon, with a road contest at Fordham University. The game will be played at Pace University, and is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
