Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Rider scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, to defeat the Fairfield University baseball team, 8-2, on Monday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. Fairfield was led by Sophomore Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) who went 2-for-3 with a double, a run batted in, and a stolen base.

Rider (11-19, 6-3 MAAC) put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the second, with a homerun from Maurice Williams.

Fairfield (8-17, 4-5 MAAC) tied it in the bottom of the third inning, when senior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) base hit, plated junior Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./Saint Joseph's) from second, after reaching on a fielder's choice, and then moved to second on a walk by DeSimone. But, on Anderson's hit, DeSimone was thrown out trying to advance to third.

In the fourth, Fairfield loaded the bases, as senior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) singled to center, with one out. Senior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) singled through the left side of the infield, and Sophomore Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) drew a two-out walk. But, Broncs' starter Justin Roszkowski got a grounder to end the inning.

Rider scored three runs on three hits in the fifth, to make it 4-1. With two outs and two strikes, Mike Poalise doubled. Gene Crimoli was then intentionally walked. James Hayes doubled to clear the bases, and came home when Scott Knazek singled to right center.

The Broncs put three more runs on the board in the sixth off a pair of hits, and two Fairfield errors. They also added a run in the top of the seventh.

In the bottom of the ninth, freshman Dave Jermine (North Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) ripped a one-out double to right. DeSimone brought him home with a double down the right field line, to make it 8-2.

Roszkowski (2-3) tossed seven innings to get the win, as he gave up one run on four hits and five walks. Freshman Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) took the loss as he was touched for five runs on nine hits. Ciallella (3-2) struck out five batters in five and two-thirds innings.

Fairfield returns to action on Wednesday, afternoon with a non-conference game against Fordham University. This will be the third meeting of the season, between the two schools, as the teams split a doubleheader at Fordham in March.

First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. on Alumni Diamond.

Notes... Senior Dan Breen moved into a three-way tie for fourth place on the school's all-time appearance list with 44, with a relief appearance this afternoon ... He is tied with Steve Colcord (1998-2001), and Al Gabriele (1970-73) ... The series concluded this afternoon, because rain on Saturday, forced the series to be moved back a day ... Freshman George Lisi (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) had his first career hit with a single in the eighth inning ... Jermine also had his first career hit, with the double in the ninth ... He also scored his first career run.
