PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. - The Fairfield University baseball team fell to Fordham University, 15-6 on Tuesday afternoon, at Finnerty Field on the campus of Pace University.
The win was the eighth in nine games for the Rams, as they improved to 18-12 on the year, while Fairfield fell to 6-19.
Fairfield opened the scoring in the first with a pair of runs on RBI-triples from junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton and freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic)
Fordham responded with a run in the first on an RBI-single by Greg Smith, and then tied the game in the second on an RBI-single by Kevin Brush.
Fairfield though regained the lead in the third as sophomore Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./St. Joseph's) walked to lead off the inning and came in on a Rudolph two-run home run, his second of the season. The Stags made it 6-2 in the fourth, as they got a run on a double play ball, as well as on an RBI-single from junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia).
The Rams though closed the gap to 6-5, as they scored three times in the fourth. Eric Reese and Tim Short led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Both runners would score on the next play, as Drew Adler drove them both in with a triple. Adler then scored one out later on a Brush double.
Fordham then exploded for five runs in the sixth inning, sending nine batters to the plate. Gary Kaible led off the inning with a solo home run, his fourth of the season. Brush followed with a double, and then scored on a two-run home run by Smith, his third of the year. Jeremy Bourgeois and Peter McGuiness then ripped back-to-back singles with Jordan Lert following with a two-run double to give the Rams a 10-6 lead.
The Rams then matched that inning with five more runs in the seventh, as Kaible led off with a walk and stole second. Smith then singled, moving Kaible to third. Bourgeois knocked in Kaible with a single, and then Smith scored on a double by McGuiness. Lert then loaded the bases with a walk with Reese also drawing a walk to force Bourgeois to score. Short then capped the scoring with a two-run single to give Fordham the 15-6 lead.
Rudolph, led Fairfield at the plate smacking his second homerun as a Stag, and going 3-for-5 with his 14th double of the season, and three runs batted in. junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) collected a pair of hits for the Stags.
Fairfield hosts Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
