FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Saint Peter's swept the Fairfield University baseball team in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Alumni Diamond on Sunday afternoon. The Peacocks took the first game 4-3, in 11 innings, and took the nightcap 5-2.
The twin bill was originally slated for Saturday afternoon, but rain forced postponement until this afternoon.
In the first game, the Stags (5-17-1, 3-7 MAAC) took a 3-1, lead into the top of the eighth inning, but the Peacocks (3-15, 2-8 MAAC) scored twice to tie it at 3-3, and scored a run in the top of the 11th to come away with their first MAAC victory. Josh Pineiro's RBI double to left center would bring home Ryan Knapp for the winning run.
Fairfield starter Tom Maisano would pitch a strong eight innings scattering three runs on four hits and five strikeouts. Maisano would get the no decision, as he yielded only one walk on the afternoon. Reliever Matt Thiffault took the loss with one run on one hit in three innings of work. Thiffault struck out two on the hill for the Stags.
Saint Peter's starter also got the no decision as he went nine innings getting hit hard with 12 hits, and three runs, while striking out six batters. Dan Cainas would come on, getting the win with one hit, and four strikeouts in two innings of work.
Antuan Barnett would go 2-for-5 with his team leading fourth homerun on the season for Fairfield. Andy Lynn, Greg Batista, Greg Leaver, and Mike Wray would each go 2-for-5 in the opener.
In the nightcap, Saint Peter's jumped on Fairfield starter Paul Gorra for five runs on three hits, and three walks in four plus innings of work. Gorra did record eight strikeouts on the afternoon.
Jesse Lewandowski would go 1-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in for the Peacocks. Gabe Poalucci would go the distance picking up his first win of the season, scattering two runs on five hits, and four walks.
Both teams will be back in action on Monday afternoon in a makeup game starting at 3 p.m. on Alumni Diamond.
