Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Freshman Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) smacked a two-out double to the left center field fence to bring home junior Greg Batista (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) for the winning run, snapping a 3-3 tie, as the Fairfield University baseball team beat Saint Peter's College, 4-3 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game at Alumni Diamond on Monday afternoon.

The Stags (6-17-1, 4-7 MAAC) trailed 3-2 heading into the eighth inning, but Batista would lace one of his two doubles on the afternoon to bring home junior Nick Hudyma (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) who started the inning off with a single, that chased Peacock (3-16, 2-9 MAAC) starter Chris Hughes from the game.

Saint Peter's struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning as Jason Garcia and Mark Ortiz each had a pair of RBI singles, off Fairfield starter junior Pablo Tamayo (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades). The Peacocks scratched a run across in the top of the third inning with a sac fly from Mike Quevedo.

Tamayo looked shaky early on giving up three runs on seven hits in the first three innings, but he would settle down retiring 12 Saint Peter's hitters in a row through the middle innings. He would finish the day with five strikeouts despite scattering eight hits, on three runs, in six and one-thirds innings of work.

Pat Quinn (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley) would get the win for the Stags yielding one hit in two and two-thirds innings of relief. The New Jersey native also recorded three strikeouts.

Fairfield would finally get to Hughes in the bottom of the sixth inning when Batista would rope his first double of the afternoon to bring home Hudyma who reached on a double to left to start the inning. Batista would advance to third on a wild pitch, and junior Antuan Barnett (Bronx, NY/Rice) would ground out to second brining home Batista to make it 3-2.

Batista would finish the day going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Hudyma also had a hot day at the plate going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Barnett, and junior Jim Sheridan (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) who got the start in left field today would each collect two hits on the afternoon, for the Stags.

Fairfield travels to Pace University for a non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon, before returning to Alumni Diamond on Wednesday, when Atlantic-10 member Rhode Island comes to town.
