Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader to Siena College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. Junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in, and freshman Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the Stags in the first game of the day.

Siena (11-13, 6-2 MAAC) scored three times in the first inning, in the first game of the afternoon, but Fairfield (6-22, 5-7 MAAC) came back with a pair of runs in the home half of the inning as junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) walked with the bases loaded, and junior Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) lofted a sacrifice fly to left to score junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland), who finished the first game going 3-for-6 with three runs scored, and an RBI.

A Siena run in the top of the third came when Rick Seltzer ripped an RBI single to right field, scoring Lou Gattozzi who reached on a fielding error. Fairfield would match that run in the bottom of the third, when freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) attempted to steal second, but the throw by the Saint catcher sailed into centerfield, allowing Scaife to score.

In the bottom of the fourth after Siena scored twice in the top of the inning, Fairfield would cross the plate four times, thanks to three hits, and an error. Girolamo started the Fairfield rally with an RBI single, plating senior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) who led the inning off with a single.

Then Anderson took a pitch, and sent it through the left side of the Siena infield to bring in Chilelli. Scaife grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing senior Mark Geanuleas (Glenside, Pa./Academy of the New Church) to score.

Siena had a play on trying to pick off Scaife at first, but on the throw, Girolamo stole home, and Scaife ended up safely at second, for the fourth run of the inning.

Siena took the lead in the top of the fifth inning, with a pair of back-to-back RBI groundouts, and would later build on the lead with six runs in the top of the sixth, and three in the seventh to make it 17-7.

Fairfield tried to make a comeback, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Geanuleas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Soucy scored when Girolamo hit into a fielder's choice.

In the ninth, Fairfield scored two more runs, off the bat of Anderson, who ripped a double down the right field line to bring home Girolamo and Chilelli.

Fairfield starter, Steve Tyburski (Feasterville, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) took the loss, giving up 11 runs on 10 hits. Tyburski (1-4) walked three, and struck out four in five innings of work. Reliever Michael Colucci scattered five runs on six hits, in two innings. Steve Flynn (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) pitched the final two innings, giving up only one hit.

In the nightcap, Fairfield senior Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Siena's John Lannan dueled it out through the first half of the game; Siena touched Dugan for runs in the first and third innings, but was able to get to him in the fourth with three runs on three hits.

Lannan kept the Stag bats quiet as he allowed only one run on four hits, and only one walk in a complete seven-innings. Lannan (4-2) struck out nine Fairfield hitters.

Dugan (2-4) gave up eight runs, six earned, on eight hits and four walks. The lefty, struck out seven hitters in six and two-thirds innings of work.

The teams will finish the MAAC series on Sunday afternoon, with a nine-inning game at Alumni Diamond. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
