LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Senior Antuan Barnett (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double, to lead the Fairfield University baseball team, on Saturday afternoon, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader, against Siena College at Siena Field.
The Saints (15-16, 5-4 MAAC) swept the twin bill from the Stags (9-13, 5-6 MAAC), taking the first game 11-1, and the nightcap 3-1, behind a combined 20 hits in the two games.
In the first game, Siena touched senior Tom Maisano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Chaminade) for five runs on nine hits and three walks in six innings of work. Maisano (4-1) struck out six hitters on the afternoon.
The Saints behind the arm of Ryan Bitter held the Stags at-bay all afternoon. Bitter (3-4) pitched a complete-game, giving up one run on five hits, and striking out five Fairfield hitters.
Siena went to work early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, one in the second, one in the fifth, two in the seventh, and four in the eighth.
Fairfield's only run of the first game, came in the top of the ninth as Barnett doubled down the right field line, and would later come home, when junior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) grounded into a double play.
Sophomore Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) was 1-for-3 with a walk, and senior Nick Hudyma (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) and senior Andy Lynn (Montville, N.J./Delbarton) were each 1-for-4 at the plate in the first game.
In the nightcap, Fairfield pushed a run across in the top of the first inning, as Hudyma scored on a throwing error by pitcher Ken Grant.
However, the Saint crossed the plate twice in the bottom of the first, and again in the bottom of the second.
Junior Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) yielded three runs, two of which were earned, on five hits and one walk for the Stags. Dugan (1-5) struck out five in six innings of work.
In the second game of the afternoon, Anderson went 2-for-3 at the plate, and sophomore Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) was 1-for-3. Hudyma was 0-for-2 with a run scored.
The two teams will wrap up the three game series in the New York Capital Region, on Sunday afternoon, with a nine-inning game. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at Siena Field.
