POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist College swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader with the Fairfield University baseball team, on Saturday afternoon at the McCann Baseball Field. The Red Foxes took the first game 6-2, and won the nightcap, 2-0

The Stags (6-21-1, 4-9 MAAC) did however receive a solid pitching performance from senior Paul Gorra (Quaker Hill, Conn./Waterford) in the second game, as the senior right-hander was touched for only two runs on seven hits. The Red Foxes (21-10-1, 11-3) had solid showing from Chuck Bechtel who went the distance scattering only three hits while striking out 12 Stags on the afternoon.

Junior Andy Lynn (Montville, N.J./Delbarton) who went 3-for-3 led the Stags at the plate in the first game of the day.

In the opener the Red Foxes crossed the plate in the bottom of the second inning, but the Stags came back to tie it with a run in the top of the third. Fairfield would push a run across in the top of the fifth, but Marist scored single run in the sixth and seventh innings, and three in the bottom of the eighth to close the game out.

In the nightcap, Gorra and Bechtel dueled it out, keeping it scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Red Foxes posted a pair of runs. Fairfield could not get any offense going as Bechtel who leads the Nation in ERA with a 0.56, heading into the day's action, kept the Stag bats at bay.

The Stags and Red Foxes will complete the three-game series on Monday afternoon in Poughkeepsie. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
