STORRS, Conn. - UConn's Steven Malinowski lofted a walk-off sacrifice-fly in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Huskies a 15-14 win over the Fairfield University baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christain Field. Fairfield was trailing 11-3, but scored 10 runs on six hits in the top of the seventh inning, to take a 14-11 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Tuesday's meeting was the second of the season between the two clubs, as the Huskies (22-14) beat the Stags (7-23) on March 31 at Alumni Diamond, 11-6.
Fairfield scored twice in the top of the first inning as junior John Sciafe had a sacrifice-fly, and freshman Brian Rudolph hit into an RBI groundout. The Huskies would score three times, in their first at-bat of the afternoon, as the temp hovered around the 80-degree mark.
The Stags would add a run in the second, when senior Mark Geanuleas laced a single to centerfield to drive in junior Tom Arpino who led the inning off with one of his three doubles of the afternoon.
But, Connecticut scored three runs on three hits in the home half of the second as Bryan Maler walked with the based loaded, and Tony Mallozzi ripped a two-run double to right field.
UConn., added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, and two in the fifth to take an 11-3 lead.
Arpino, led the seventh inning off with his second two-bagger of the afternoon, and was later driven in by senior David Soucy with a base hit to left. Then after two walks to load the bases, junior Jim Girolamo was hit by a pitch to score Soucy.
Then after a UConn, pitching change, junior Doug Anderson singled through the left side of the Connecticut infield, to put two more runs on the board for the Stags. With the bases loaded after a walk, Rudolph reached on an error by the third baseman, scoring Girolamo.
That brought junior Dewey Raymond to the plate, where he singled to plate Anderson. Batting for the second time in the inning, Arpino had his third double of the afternoon, bringing his total to 11 for the season, to left field, scoring Rudolph and Scaife.
Soucy had an RBI single, to bring home Raymond. Fairfield would add another run, when Adam Chilelli hit into a fielder's choice, to bring in Arpino.
In the bottom of the seventh, UConn, scored two runs on three hits to make it 14-13. The Huskies tied it in the eighth with a error on a sacrifice bunt.
UConn won finished the game in the ninth with the sac-fly.
At the plate, Arpino was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, and two runs batted in. Anderson, was 3-for-3 with two runs, and two RBI, while Geanuleas was 2-for-4 with two runs and a run batted in. Raymond also collected a pair of hits.
Fairfield, returns to the field on Wednesday, as it travels up I-95 to meet Yale University for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader. First pitch for the pair of seven-inning games is 3:30 p.m. at historic Yale Field.
