Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Despite scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Fairfield University baseball team fell to Yale University 6-4, on Wednesday afternoon, in a non-conference game at Alumni Diamond.

It was a pitcher's dual early on, but Yale (15-15) pushed across runs in the top of the fourth and sixth inning to take a 2-0 lead. Randy Leonard tripled to right centerfield, and would come home on a John Janco groundout to first base in the fourth, and Marc Sawyer doubled down the leftfield line to plate Justin Ankney who stroked a one-out double to centerfield.

Neither team scored until the ninth inning, when Yale tacked on four runs on three hits to take a 6-0 lead. A Janco single followed by a base hit by Jake Doyle, and a walk by C.J. Orrico to load the bases for Pedro Obregon who smacked a triple to left center field to clear the bases. He would later come home on a wild pitch.

In their last turn at-bat, the Stags (10-16, 5-7 MAAC) scored four times on three hits, and two errors. Sophomore Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) reached and advanced to second on an error by the Yale third baseman. Then senior Nick Hudyma (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) laced an RBI double to left field for the Stags first run of the game.

Hudyma then advanced to third on a wild pitch, and senior Andy Lynn (Montville, N.J./Delbarton) drew a walk to put runners on the corners for Fairfield. Hudyma scored and Lynn moved up to third, when the Yale catcher, Eric Rasmussen attempted to throw down to first for a pick-off, but the throw sailed above the first baseman's glove.

After a sophomore Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) walk, senior Antuan Barnett laced an RBI single that brought Lynn home. Then with two-outs, junior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) laced a single to left centerfield to plate Anderson.

The Fairfield rally ended when sophomore John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) flied out to centerfield to end the game.

Senior Pablo Tamayo (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) started for the Stags, and seemed to pitch well despite giving up two runs on five hits. Tamayo (0-7) struck out five and allowed no walks in six innings of work.

Yale used five pitchers on the afternoon, as starter Colin Ward-Henninger started and went four innings, allowing four hits, two walks, and striking out two batters.

Hudyma was 3-for-5 at the plate with a run scored and one RBI. He also recorded his fourth double of the season, and his 14th stolen base. He is 14-of-18 in stolen base opportunities so far. Soucy was 2-for-3 with a run batted in.

Fairfield returns to action this weekend, with a three-game road trip to Western New York to face Niagara University in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series.
