NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a tough 13-6 non-conference baseball game to Yale on Wednesday afternoon at historic Yale Field. The Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 4-4 tie to pull away.
Yale (14-18) broke the ice with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Stags (6-23-1) tied it with a run in the bottom of the second and a two-run homerun from sophomore Greg Batista (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) in the bottom of the third inning. Junior Mike Wray (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) would loft a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home junior Antuan Barnett for the Stags first run of the game.
The Bulldogs crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth, but the Stags quickly tied it again with an RBI double to left centerfield by Barnett to bring home Batista who reached base with a walk to start the inning. Batista would go 1-for-4 on the afternoon with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Barnett would go 2-for-5 with a run batted in and one run scored.
Both teams would combine for 26 hits on the afternoon (16 Yale, 10 Fairfield), but the Stags would commit five errors on the afternoon.
Randy Leonard would break the 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a double down the right field line with the bases loaded to make it 7-4, off Fairfield reliever freshman Sean Keegan (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug) would started the inning. The Bulldogs would later tack on a run, and add two in the bottom of the seventh and three in the bottom of the eighth.
Leonard would finish the day for the Bulldogs going 1-for-3 with 3 RBI, and two runs scored. Chris Elkins would go 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and two RBI.
Fairfield returns to action on Saturday afternoon, when it begins a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series at LeMoyne.
