FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader to Marist College on Monday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. As almost six inches of rain fell on the Bridgeport area over the weekend, the series was postponed until this afternoon.
Marist (15-21, 9-5 MAAC) won the first game 11-2, and despite a solid pitching performance from junior Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis), took the nightcap, 2-1. Kamintzky (3-4) gave the Stags (11-22, 6-8 MAAC) seven innings of four-hit ball.
The Red Foxes scored the first run of the second game, in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter, Max Most reached on an error, then stole second and moved to third on another error by the Fairfield defense. Then Travis Musolf grounded out, which allowed Most to come home.
Fairfield tied the game in the bottom of the first, as sophomore Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) roped a two out single to left field. He then stole second, and came home, when senior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) reached on a fielding error by the Marist second baseman.
After getting out of the first inning, with a pair of strikeouts, Kamintzky retired 10 of the next 12 batters that he faced. He finished the game with six strikeouts, to raise his season-total to 54, which is good for third in the MAAC.
Likewise, his counterpart George Heath pitched well, as he gave up one run on four hits and three strikeouts in six innings. Robert Ryan pitched a perfect seventh for the save.
In the top of the seventh inning, Marist loaded the bases and pushed across a run on a fielder's choice by Kyle Myer.
DeSimone, Scaife, junior Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./Saint Joseph's University), and sophomore Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) each collected hits for the Stags.
In the first game, Marist took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, then two in the second, fourth and fifth innings. They would also add three in the top of the eighth inning.
Fairfield scored its first run in the bottom of the sixth inning. DeSimone's infield single, allowed Chilelli to score from third, after leading the inning off with a double to left field. DeSimone added another RBI in the bottom of the eighth inning, with a single up the middle to plate freshman Dave Jermine (North Haven, Conn./Notre Dame). Jermine reached on a pinch-hit single to right field.
DeSimone went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Scaife, sophomore Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and Chilelli each had doubles for Fairfield.
Fairfield returns to action on Tuesday afternoon for an in-state clash with the University of Connecticut. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, Conn.
