STORRS, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team dropped its fifth straight contest with a tough 8-0 loss at the University of Connecticut this afternoon in non-conference play. With the loss, the Stags drop to 9-22 overall while the Huskies improve to 20-20 on the season.
Connecticut got to rookie pitcher Kevin Fico (Stamford, Conn.) early, putting up a three-spot in the bottom of the first inning. The Huskies added a run in both the second and third innings to take a 5-0 lead. Fico (0-4) settled down after the third, posting three scoreless innings. In six innings of work, Fico gave up five runs, four earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts. Sophomore Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J.) tossed two innings in relief allowing three runs on three hits all coming in the eighth inning.
Fairfield threatened in the top of the fourth inning loading the bases with one out on a single by Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y.) but the Stags were unable to capitalize.
Brendan McGinn (6-1) earned the win for the Huskies, scattering four hits while striking out four batters. Reliever Doug Jennings notched two no-hit innings, while Will Musson pitched a scoreless ninth to keep the shutout in tact.
Freshman Matt Tiagwad (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) had two of the Stags' six hits on the day, going 2-for-4 with a double.
Fairfield will be back in action tomorrow, April 25, as it hosts Central Connecticut at 3:30 p.m.
