WEST POINT, N.Y. - On a windy afternoon at Doubleday Field, the Fairfield University baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to Army on Tuesday afternoon. The Stags were led by sophomore Brian Schappert who went 3-for-4 at the plate.
The wind was a factor throughout, as Army (27-10) scored single runs in the second, third, fifth, and seventh innings, while Fairfield (9-27) pushed across a run in the top of the third.
The Black Knights scored the first run of the afternoon in the second, as Nate Stone singled up the middle, then went to second with Jeremy Stache was thrown out attempting to beat out a bunt. Stone came across when Cole White smacked a double to left-centerfield.
The Stags tied the game in the top of the third inning. Freshman Adam Chilelli started the rally with a single, and then went to second, when Schappert knocked his second hit of the afternoon. Both runners moved up 90-feet when the Army pitcher pickoff attempt sailed past the first baseman.
Junior Jim Girolamo was the next hitter for the Stags, and his grounder to second, scored Chilelli to make it 1-1.
Army's Ben Mayhew kept the Stags in check, as he allowed one unearned run on seven hits, over five innings of work. Mayhew struck out four hitters, and along with the rest of the Army bullpen held the Stags scoreless over the last six innings of the game.
Army took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning, as Milan Dinga advanced to second on a passed ball, and came around to score on a two-out double down the right field line by Stone.
In the fifth innings, Army made it 3-1, when Schuyler Williamson hit into an RBI groundout which scored Barnes Connell who walked and went to third on a base hit by Kyle Scogin.
In the seventh, Army pushed another run across, with three straight singles by Williamson, Walker Gorham, and Stone.
Chilelli finished the day going 1-for-3 with a run scored, joining Schappert, Girolamo, Doug Anderson, John Scaife, Dewey Raymond, and Chilelli with base hits for the Stags on the afternoon.
Fairfield returns to action on Wednesday afternoon, when it closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule with Fordham University. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. at Alumni Diamond.
