FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fordham scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, and knocked nine hits to defeat the Fairfield University baseball team 5-2, at Alumni Diamond on Wednesday afternoon. The loss drops the Stags to 12-18 overall, while Fordham improves to 18-21-1.
Jordan Lert stoked a double down the right field line to drive in Joe Ciccone who singled with one out in the second. Joe Gwozdz was the next hitter, and lofted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Kevin Brush, who advanced to third on the Lert double.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Stags cut the lead in half, when sophomore John Scaife(Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) smacked to first homerun of the season, and fourth of his career over the fence in right field.
Fordham then tacked on a run in the top of the fourth, when Drew Alder reached base on a throwing error by Fairfield shortstop Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) to plate Ciccone who singled to left center to start the inning.
The Rams added another in the top of the fifth as Greg Smith hit his fifth homerun of the season.
Andrew Paolillo kept the Stags bats at bay, as he pitched five innings of relief, giving up one run on four hits and two walks. Paolillo (1-2) stuck out five Stags on the afternoon.
The Stags were able to get to Paolillo in the seventh as Scaife reached base on a fielding error by the Fordham first baseman, and Anderson scored, after drawing a one-out walk.
Fordham tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning, as Tim Short laced a single up the middle to drive in Ted Kearns who had a leadoff double to left field.
The Stags had one more chance in the bottom of the ninth inning, as junior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) doubled down the leftfield line, however Craig Tscherendnikov came on to get senior pinch hitter, Andy Lynn (Montville, N.J./Delbarton) to ground-out, and advance Soucy to third. Tscherendnikov then retired Scaife and sophomore Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) to pick up the save.
Socuy was 3-for-4 at the plate for the Stags, and Scaife was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored. Ciccone was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Smith was 2-for-5 with a run scored, and an RBI.
Senior Pablo Tamayo (Miami, Fla./Ransom Everglades) was tagged with the loss, as he gave up four runs on six hits and one walk. Tamayo (0-8) struck out four batters on the afternoon for the Stags.
Fairfield is back in action on Thursday afternoon, when Stony Brook visits Alumni Diamond for Fairfield's final non-conference game of the regular season. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
