FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Stony Brook scored six times in the top of the sixth inning, en route to a 7-4 win over the Fairfield University baseball team on Thursday afternoon, at Alumni Diamond. The game was a make-up game from late March.
Fairfield (12-19) broke the ice in the bottom of the third inning as senior Sal Mancuso (Bethpage, N.J./Bethpage) singled home sophomore Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) who reached on a fielder's choice.
The next batter for the Stags was senior Antuan Barnett (Bronx, N.Y./Rice), and ripped a base hit down the right field line, to plate senior Nick Hudyma (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) who had an infield single.
The Seawolves (17-19) put a run on the board in the fifth when Matt Devins reached base on an error by the Fairfield third baseman to score Andrew Larsen who led the inning off with a triple to right centerfield.
In the sixth, the Stony Brook bats came alive as it scored six runs on five hits. Larsen had an RBI double and advanced to third, and would later come home on a groundout. Then Cole Cicatelli stroked a run scoring double. Nick Theoharis would do the most damage with a three-run homerun.
Fairfield would get one of those runs back in the bottom of the sixth, when sophomore Doug Anderson smacked his fourth homerun of the season, and fifth for his Fairfield career.
In the bottom of the seventh the Stags added another when Hudyma laced a one-out double to bring home senior Andy Lynn (Montville, N.J./Delbarton) who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.
Kurt Jung pitched two innings of relief, for the Seawolves, to get the victory. He gave up no runs and no hits. Jung (2-0) struck out two Stags.
Sophomore Dan Breen (Troy, N.Y./Troy) took the loss for the Stags in relief of sophomore Sean Keegan (Middlebury, Conn./Pomperaug). Breen yielded six runs on six hits in two innings on the hill. Keegan (0-1) left after four innings, as he gave up one run on five hits, while striking out five batters. Sophomore Kit Golofaro (Islip, N.Y./Islip) made his collegiate debut, pitching three shutout innings, giving up only one hit and one walk.
The Stags were led by Anderson, who was 2-for-4 at the plate, with a run scored and one RBI. Lynn was 2-for-2 with a run scored, and his fifth double of the season.
Theoharis was 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored, while Dave Mischo was 3-for-4 with a run scored.
Fairfield will head to Iona College this weekend for a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series starting on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
