STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Senior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and freshman Dave Jermine (North Haven, Conn./Notre Dame West Haven) each had a pair of hits and a run scored, but it was not enough, as the Fairfield University baseball team dropped a 10-3 decision to Stony Brook, on a rain soaked Tuesday afternoon at University Field.
Fairfield (13-25) quickly went to work in the top of the first inning, as Girolamo and Jermine hit back-to-back singles, and a sophomore Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) walk to load the bases. That brought senior John Sciafe (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) to the plate, and he lofted a sacrifice fly to left, which brought Girolamo home.
With one out and runners on first and second, senior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) came to the plate, and delivered with a run scoring single to bring in Jermine.
Stony Brook (16-22) got one run back in the home half of the first inning, as Tom Pennino single scored Chris Sipp.
In the second inning, Fairfield put another run on the board, when DeSimone grounded out, to plate sophomore Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) who walked, went to second when sophomore Tyler Birrittella (Tarrytown, N.Y./Sleepy Hollow) was hit by a pitch. Chilelli went to third, when Jermine reached on an error.
Stony Brook pushed across another run in the bottom of the second inning, as Brian Witkowski stroked a two-out single to score Chris Cruz. Witkowski tied the game in fourth with another two-out single, knotting the score at 3-3.
The score remained tied at 3-3 until the bottom of the sixth inning, with Sipp's game-winning RBI, scoring Cruz on a bunt single. The Seawolves added another run in the sixth to make it 5-3.
However, in the eighth, Stony Brook broke the game open with five runs on six hits, to make it 10-3.
Fairfield returns home for the final Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series at Alumni Diamond against Canisius College, on Saturday afternoon.
