FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Canisius College spoiled the Fairfield University baseball team's Senior Day, by taking both ends of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader on a sunny afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The Golden Griffs took an extra-inning thriller in the first game, winning 11-8 in 10 innings. Canisius took the nightcap as well, 8-4.
Before the first game of the afternoon, the Stags (13-27, 7-12 MAAC) recognized their eight graduating seniors in a brief ceremony. Three of those seniors rewrote the Fairfield record book on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) needed two hits to move into fifth place on the school's all-time hits list with 171. Anderson moved past Andy Larned (1995-98). Christian Jung (1996-99) is next on the Fairfield shortstop's radar, with 174 hits.
Senior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) moved past Mike Svab (1987-90) for fifth place on Fairfield's all-time RBI list with five on the afternoon. In the first game of the afternoon, the senior first baseman went 3-for-6 with four runs batted in. In the nightcap, he was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in. Scaife has driven in 110 runners in his career, and needs five to tie Larned for fourth.
The third Fairfield senior to move up the ladder in the Fairfield record book, was Dan Breen (Troy, N.Y./Troy). Breen appeared in his 51st career game, which places him in a three-way tie for second place on Fairfield's appearance list, by pitching two innings of relief in the first game of the day. Scott Larkin (1990-93) tops the list with 55 career appearances.
In addition, senior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) had an outstanding afternoon for the Stags, as he went 3-for-5 with two RBI in the first game, and finished it off with a 3-for-4 performance in the nightcap.
Also in the first game, junior Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./Saint Joseph's University) went 2-for-3 with three runs scored. In the nightcap, the second baseman was 1-for-3.
The series concludes on Sunday with a single-game at 12 p.m.
