Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team received a pair of solid pitching performances from senior Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), and junior Steven Tyburski (Feasterville, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader sweep of Iona College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Diamond.

In the first game, Dugan (5-4) pitched a complete-game five hitter, in an 11-1 win. He allowed only one run and two walks, while striking out eight, which ties him for fourth place on the school's all-time strikeout list, with Steve Becker (1988-91) with 177.

As winds gusts from 30 to 35 miles per hour, throughout the first game, and parts of the second, Dugan faced the minimum throughout four innings, while also allowing no hits, before allowing a single in the top of the fifth.

However, the Fairfield (12-29, 10-10 MAAC) offense gave Dugan a cushion by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) had an RBI single plating sophomore Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./St. Joseph) who led the inning off with a single through the left side of the Iona infield.

Then with the bases loaded, junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) scored on a wild pitch, then after junior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) grounded into a fielder's choice, junior Dewey Raymond (Norwalk,Conn./Trinity Catholic) singled scoring freshman Brian Rudolph (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic), who was hit by a pitch.

Fairfield added a pair of runs in the third inning to make it 5-0, as Raymond added his second and third RBI of the first game with a double to left centerfield plating Arpino who singled, and Rudolph who was hit for the second time in as many at-bats. Rudolph would be hit three times in the first game, finishing the game 1-for-1 with four runs scored.

Iona (7-35, 4-15 MAAC) put a run on the board in the fifth, when it finally got to Dugan, as Lawrence Taylor singled to left centerfield plating Matt Bruno who doubled.

But, the Stags were not done scoring, as in the seventh; they would put two more up, as Scaife scored on a wild pitch, and freshman Adam Chilelli (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) who singled through the right side to drive in Rudolph.

In the eighth, Chilelli brought in three runs with a double to left center, and Schappert's single, which brought in Chilelli, made it 11-1 Fairfield.

Raymond was 3-for-4 to lead the Stags with three RBI, and a run scored. Scaife finished the first game, 2-for-4 with a run scored, and a run batted in. Chillelli was also 2-for-4 with four runs batted in and a run scored.

In the nightcap, the bats were kept quiet by Tyburski (2-6) and Iona's James Kosky. Tyburski pitched six and a third innings to pick up the win, giving up only one walk, while striking out two.

Kosky pitched six innings, in the loss giving up one run on two hits and three walks, while striking out five.

The only offense in the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning, as both pitchers cruised along until that point.

With two outs, Raymond's double down the left field line, put a runner in scoring position for the Stags. Then Chilelli drew a walk, and senior Mark Geanuleas (Glenside, Pa./Academy of the New Church) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, for Schappert who walked for the game-winning run.

Iona was able to load the bases in the top of the seventh, but junior Dan Breen (Troy, N.Y./Troy) came on in relief of Tyburski to get the final two outs, to shut the door. Breen earned his third save of the season.

Raymond, went 1-for-2 with a run scored, and his second double of the afternoon, and fourth of the season.

Fairfield looks to sweep the MAAC series with the Gaels, as the teams will complete the series with a nine-inning game on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at Alumni Diamond.
