FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team was swept by Iona College in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. Iona scored 10 runs on 16 hits in the first game to win, 10-2, and scored four runs in the top of the fifth and seventh innings to take an 8-3 victory.

Rob Fortner led the Gaels (19-22, 13-9 MAAC) at the plate by going, 4-for-5 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Five Iona players would collect at least two hits in the first game of the day. Kevin Sorhaindo smacked a two-run homerun in the top of the fourth inning for Iona.

Junior Nick Hudyma (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) would lead the Stags (6-31-1, 4-18 MAAC) at the plate going 4-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Freshman Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) and junior Mike Wray (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) would each collect a hit for the Stags in the first game.

Marty Hand would get his second win of the season for the Gaels, while junior Tom Maisano (Farmingdale, N.Y./Chaminade) would take the loss for the Stags. Maisano would get roughed up for nine runs on 12 hits and one walk. He struck out six and moves five closer to tying Rob Elinskas (1994-97) for fifth place on the all-time strikeout list at Fairfield.

In the nightcap, Fairfield struck first when junior Antuan Barnett (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) would hit his sixth homerun of the season in the bottom of the first inning, with sophomore Greg Batista (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) aboard after a single through the left side.

The Stags would add another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when freshman John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) singled up the middle to bring home right fielder Jim Sheridan (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) who led off the inning with a double to left field.

Senior Paul Gorra (Quaker Hill, Conn./Waterford) scattered four runs on six hits and five walks, while striking out six in the nightcap for the Stags.

The teams will close out the three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. First pitch for the nine-inning game is slated for 12 p.m.
