BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Fairfield University baseball team smacked a school-record six homeruns, en route to a 14-11 win over Canisius College in the first game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex Saturday afternoon.

Junior Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) and junior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansoina) each had two, leading the Stags to 14 hits in game one. Raymond finished the first game 2-for-5 with three runs batted in and three runs scored, while Scaife was 2-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.

Junior Tom Arpino (Brooklyn, N.Y./Xaverian) and senior Mark Geanuleas (Glenside, Pa./Academy of the New Church) also had round trippers in the first game of the afternoon. Arpino also knocked in three RBI, and Geanuleas scored three times, for the Stags.

Senior Tim Dugan picked up his sixth win of the season as he scattered six run on 10 hits, and four walks in seven innings of work Dugan (6-4) struck out four raising his career total to 181, moving past Tom Maisano for third place on the school's all-time strikeout list. Dugan has recorded a career-high 64 "K's" this season.

Junior Dan Breen picked up his fourth save of the season for the Stags, despite giving up five runs on eight hits in two innings of work. It was his 22nd appearance of the season for the Troy, N.Y. native.

Canisius' Jordan Neufeld took the loss for the Stags, tossing three innings, while allowing four runs on three hits and five walks.

In the nightcap, Mike Bax pitched a complete-game nine-hitter for a 10-8 victory. Gabe Baida was 2-for-3 for the Griffs with two runs batted in and three runs.

The Stags opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as Scaife scored on a wild pitch, after doubling down the right field line. Then Arpino scored on a freshman Brian Rudolph singled, and he scored on an error, then Geanuleas singled up the middle to bring in Rudolph.

However, Canisius tied the game in the home half of the third, as Josh Matlow had a RBI single and Baida came home on a fielder's choice by Dennis Wellman. Ricky Pillitteri tied it with a RBI groundout.

Fairfield made it 4-3 when junior Jim Girolamo drew a walk, scoring freshman Adam Chilelli who singled, and later advanced on an error by the pitcher.

Canisius scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Baida knocked a two-run double down the left field line, and Matt Mazurek doubled to right center, and later scored on a wild pitch.

Arpino cut the lead to 9-6 in the fifth, with a double, and Rudolph grounded out. Canisius put another run on the board, making it 10-6. Fairfield added two runs in the seventh as Scaife singled, and after an out by Raymond, Arpino smacked his second homerun of the day making it 10-8.

Arpino went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored, and Scaife was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

The teams return to action on Sunday afternoon for the completion of the three-game MAAC series. First pitch at Demske Sports Complex is set for 12 p.m.
