RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Fairfield University baseball team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader to Manhattan College on Thursday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park. The pair of losses drops the Stags to 16-26 overall, and 11-15 in the MAAC, while Manhattan improves to 22-25 overall, and 15-9 in the MAAC.

In the first game, Manhattan crossed the plate four times in the bottom of the third inning, on four hits.

It would remain 4-0 until the top of the seventh, when Fairfield put three on the board to cut the Jasper lead to one run. Senior Jim Sheridan (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) led the inning off, by reaching on an error by the Manhattan shortstop. Then after a single by senior Nick Hudyma (New Britain, Conn./New Britain) senior Andy Lynn (Montville, N.J./Delbarton) ripped a double down the right field line to plate Sheridan.

Sophomore Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) the grounded out, in the process scoring Hudyma, who moved to third on the Lynn double. Lynn moved to third on the Anderson groundout and came home, when senior Antuan Barnett (Bronx, N.Y./Rice) lofted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Lynn.

However, in the bottom of the seventh, Manhattan added an insurance run, to make it 5-3.

Junior Tim Dugan (Cedar Grove, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) took the loss for the Stags, giving up five runs (three earned) on eight hits and three walks. Dugan (4-8) struck out four batters to raise his team-high strikeout total to 61.

At the plate in the opener, Fairfield was led by Lynn who was 2-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored. Sophomore Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) was 2-for-4.

In the nightcap, Manhattan broke the ice with a run in the bottom of the second; however, Fairfield would put three in the top of the third. Anderson stroked a single through the left side of the Manhattan infield to bring home sophomore Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) who drew a one-out walk. Then Girolamo, singled through the left side to bring in Hudyma and Anderson.

Manhattan added a run in the bottom of the fourth, and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and final inning to extend the game into the eighth, where it got a double, and a single to leftfield to win the game.

Freshman Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) took the loss in relief for the Stags, pitching one and two-thirds innings of work, giving up one run on two hits and two walks. The loss was Kamintzky's first collegiate loss, as his record falls to 4-1. He did strike out three Jaspers.

Senior Matt Young (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) started for the Stags, and pitched six innings of three-run ball, giving up eight hits and two walks, while striking out four batters.

Anderson was 1-for-3 with an RBI and a runs scored, while Hudyma was 1-for-4 with a run scored, and Girolamo was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.

The two teams will finish the three-game series tomorrow afternoon, with a nine-inning game at 12 p.m. at Van Cortlandt Park.
