FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University senior third baseman Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) made the transition from a reserve player in his first season with the Stags in 2004, to an everyday player and starting third baseman last season. He was selected to be one of the 2006 team's tri-captains along with seniors Dan Breen (Troy, N.Y./Troy) and John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia).
As Raymond and the rest of the Fairfield baseball team prepare for the season opener at James Madison University February 24-26, he recently took the time to sit down with FairfieldStags.com to answer some questions.
1. How did you first get started playing baseball? A: I've been playing baseball since I was four or five year's old, maybe even before that, in my backyard.
2. What was the first sport you played? A: Baseball along with football and basketball. I pretty much started playing all three about the same time, as long as I can remember.
3. Individually what are your goals for the upcoming season? A: I want to improve on last year's performance, and help the team into the playoffs. Who knows maybe even win a MAAC Championship.
4. How well do you feel Fairfield will do this season? A: I think we'll be better than last year. We have everybody back, and as a senior I am looking forward to the season.
5. How has preseason gone so far? A: It's been going real well. We're looking forward to getting out on a real field and not in a gym. But all in all the team has been looking good.
6. Who is your favorite Major League Baseball Team? A: The New York Yankees, even though I'm a Connecticut guy.
7. How do you feel they will do this season? A: They always do well. I have no worries about that.
8. How many Major League Baseball Stadiums have you been to, and which one is the best? A: I've been to about four or five, but my favorite is definitely Yankee Stadium with the history and the tradition.
9. Is there any significance to the number 15, which you wear? A: I've had it since I was a freshman in high school. It's been good to me so far, so I've kept wearing it.
10. Why did you choose to attend Fairfield University? A: I didn't want to go to school too far from home, and I've heard great things about it, from the campus to the people here.
11. What is your greatest sports moment? A: When I was 12-years-old my football team finished third in the Pop Warner Super Bowl, and my baseball team finished fifth or sixth in the Babe Ruth World Series. So it was a pretty good year for me.
12. What is your dream job outside of playing baseball? A: Run a Fortune 500 company.
13. Whom do you admire the most and why? A: My father is my role model, because he has been so successful in every aspect of his life. I hope to be like him someday.
14. What does it mean to be playing collegiate baseball near your hometown of Norwalk, Conn.? A: I think it's great, because people who I grew up with can come and see me play whenever we are at home. Since I've been playing baseball around this part of the state, I've played in Fairfield many times, so it is almost like home to me.
Fairfield opens the season with a three-game series at James Madison University. The 2006 home opener is slated for Tuesday, March 21 against St. John's. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. on Alumni Diamond. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) slate begins with a three-game series against Le Moyne March 25-26.
