LYNCHBURG, Va. - A Michael Just ground out in the third inning, scoring Paul Keller, proved to be the only run of the game, as Liberty University defeated the Fairfield University baseball team, 1-0, at Worthington Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
Keller opened the home half of the third with a single to right field putting a runner on base for the Flames (9-3). He advanced to second, after a walk by Patrick Gaillard. Then went to third after a sacrifice bunt, which brought Just to the plate, where he hit a grounder to junior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) putting the Flames on the board.
Sophomore Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) gave Fairfield (0-4) a quality start, giving up only one run on four hits and four walks. Kamintzky (0-2) struck out five Liberty batters on the afternoon.
Junior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) led Fairfield at the plate going 3-for-4 with his second double of the season.
The Stags pounded out six hits against Liberty pitching, but left five runners on base. Anderson, senior David Soucy (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), and junior Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic) joined the hit parade for the Stags, with hits on the afternoon.
Keller was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Flames, while scoring the game-winning run. Ben Yerkes had the Flames other hit, going 1-for-3.
Three Liberty pitchers combined for a shutout, as starter David Bechtold went five innings, yielding no runs and four hits. Michael Solbach went two innings allowing only one hit, and Ryan Page pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth innings for the save.
Fairfield continues its spring break trip to Virginia with a nine-inning game at Radford University on Thursday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m. at Dedmon Center Park. Following the skirmish at Radford, the Stags will conclude their spring break trip to Virginia with a three-game series at George Mason University, on Saturday and Sunday.
