BRADENTON, Fla. - The Fairfield University baseball team is currently on its spring break trip to the IMG Sports Academy. The Stags have played four of its seven schedule games, and have has some solid outing by several individuals. Here are some notes and achievements from the first part of the team's trip to the "Sunshine State."
**Junior Ed Kamintzky (Astoria, N.Y./Regis) recorded his 100th career strikeout on Sunday against Duquesne ... Kamintzky struck out three hitters, despite getting tagged with the loss to the Dukes.
**Fairfield pounded out 20 runs on 19 hits en route to a 20-11 win over Valparaiso on Monday morning ... In that contest, senior Jim Girolamo (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) knocked in six runners while going 4-for-6 with three runs scored ... Senior John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) was 3-for-5 with five runs batted in ... Junior Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./Saint Joseph's University) was 3-for-5 with four runs scored.
**Graduate Student Paul DeMarco (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Duke University) picked up his first win since the 2003 season, as he gave up three runs on three hits, while striking out three batters against Valpo ... It was his first win since May 5, 2003 when he pitched Duke to a win over No. 14 Clemson University.
**In the 6-4 win over Eastern Kentucky, Schappert reached base five times, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, and three walks ... Heading into the contest with EKU, the Stags' second baseman had a .514 on-base percentage.
**Freshman Doug Ciallella (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) won his first collegiate game on Tuesday against Eastern Kentucky ... Ciallella gave up three runs on six hits and three walks in five innings of work.
**Freshman Dan Gallagher (Allendale, N.J./Bergen Catholic) was spotless in one and two-thirds innings to pick up his first collegiate save ... Gallagher allowed only one walk, while striking out one.
**Fairfield will face Indiana for the first time in school-history on Wednesday afternoon ... The Stags will meet FDU on Thursday ... FDU leads the all-time series with its tri-state rival 13-4 ... Fairfield will conclude the trip to Florida on St. Patrick's Day against Bradley ... It will be the first time Fairfield and Bradley have faced each other on the diamond.
On Deck:
When the Stags return from Florida, they will open the home portion of their schedule, with a pair of mid-week games against St. John's (March 21) and Central Connecticut State (March 22) ... Fairfield defeated the Red Storm last season 18-13 in Jamaica, N.Y.
