Fairfield, Conn. - After taking both ends of a doubleheader from New York Tech yesterday in Old Westbury, NY, Fairfield University collected a season-high 14 hits to defeat the Bears 15-5 on Sunday afternoon in Division I baseball action at Alumni Diamond. Senior second baseman Cristian Jung (Brewster, NY) paced the Stag attack with a 3-for-4 game and three RBI. Stag starter Steve Colcord (1-2, North Hampton, NH) scattered seven hits in seven innings, allowing just one earned run. The Stags improve to 4-8 on the season. New York Tech falls to 0-10.
After a scoreless first inning, New York Tech scored two in the top of the second on an error by shortstop Ed McCrann (Middle Village, NY). Fairfield answered with three runs in the bottom half of the second on only one hit. Bear starter Doug Stasio (Shoreham, NY) walked the first four batters of the inning. After reliever Shane McKeon (Elmhurst, NY) struck out McCrann, centerfielder Jim Lopusznick (Leonardo, NJ) delivered an RBI single. Jung followed with a sacrifice fly before McKeon struck out Paul Macchio (Carmel, NY) to end the inning.
New York Tech came right back with two more runs on two Stag errors in the top of the third to take a 4-3 lead. The lead lasted until the bottom of the fourth when Fairfield collected five runs, including three on Tom Lopusznick's (Leonardo, NJ) second home run of the season, to go up 8-4. The Stags scored four more in the bottom of the fifth to build a 12-4 cushion. Freshman Ryan Bittner (Emerson, NJ) led off the inning with a solo home run to center field, his team-leading third rould tripper of the season. Matt Fratturelli (Leominster, MA) followed with a single to right field and then Matt McGoldrick (Butler, NJ) connected for his first collegiate home run to right center field.
The Stags tacked on a single run in the sixth on an RBI double by McCrann. The Bears scored once in the top of the seventh to pull the score to 13-5, but that would be as close as they would get as Fairfield added single runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings.
Five different Stags had multi-hit games. McCrann finished 3-for-5 while Jim Lopusznick, Bittner and McGoldrick each collected two hits apiece.
Rob Santoro (Amityville, NY) and Bryan Goelz (St. James, NY) each had two hits for the Bears. Rob Taormina (0-2, East Meadow, NY) took the loss.
