Fairfield, Conn. - Although the Fairfield University baseball team went 2-5 last week, junior Paul Macchio (Carmel, NY) had an outstanding week at the plate. For his efforts, Macchio was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) South Player of the Week.
Macchio batted a blistering .591 in seven games going 13-for-22. The 6-foot-1, 205-lb. catcher/designated hitter set a new Fairfield single game record with eight RBI vs. Manhattan last Monday. In the Stags' 24-11 win over C.W. Post he tied two more single game records with five hits and five runs scored. For the week Macchio collected 14 RBI, hit three home runs, scored 10 runs, was a perfect 8-for-8 in stolen base attempts and had a .690 on base percentage. On the season Macchio is batting .284 with 14 solen bases in 17 attempts. He ranks second on the Stags with five home runs and is fourth in RBI with 20.
The Stags (12-17, 5-9 MAAC) return to action on Tuesday when they host Central Connecticut State in a non-conference game at 3:30 pm. They will then begin a stretch of eight straight MAAC games on Wednesday when they travel to Jersey City, NJ to take on St. Peter's College in a doubleheader at 12:00 pm.
