FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team travels to Manhattan College for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) baseball series. Fairfield enters the weekend with a 4-5 record in the MAAC, while Manhattan is tied for first with a 7-2 conference mark.
This Weekend: April 15: Fairfield at Manhattan (DH), 12 p.m. ~ Riverdale, N.Y. April 17: Fairfield at Manhattan, 1 p.m. ~ Riverdale, N.Y.Last Time Out: Sophomore Tyler Birrittella went 2-for-3 with four runs batted in, and senior Doug Anderson knocked in three runners, as Fairfield defeated Fordham 12-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Diamond ... Freshman Dave Jermine went 2-for-2 as a pinch hitter ... Senior Jim Girolamo went 1-for-3 and scored three times ... Freshman George Lisi went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in and a run scored ... Senior Steve Tyburski tossed six innings of three-hit ball to get the win ... At one point, Tyburski retired nine batters in a row.
Quick Hits: Senior John Scaife needs seven more runs batted in to reach the 100-RBI plateau in his career ... Senior Dan Breen moved into sole possession of four place on the school's all-time appearance list with 45 ... He needs six to move into a tie for second with Tim Dugan and Dave Carelotti with 51 ... Scott Larkin is the school's leader with 55 ... With games played through April 9, Fairfield is 13th in the NCAA with 1.13 double plays per game (27 total) ... Against Fordham, the Stags executed a 4-6-3 double play in the eighth inning ... Also with games played through April 9, Fairfield is leading the MAAC with a team .964 fielding percentage ... With runners in scoring position, sophomore Peter Allen is hitting .435 (10-23) ... Against Fordham on Wednesday, the Stags pounded out 11 hits, as all but one of the starters had a least one hit in the game ... Senior Tom Arpino needs 10 hits to reach the 100-hit plateau ... Junior Ed Kamintzky, who is scheduled to get the ball this weekend, is third in the MAAC in strikeouts with 42 ... For his career, he has 123 strikeouts.
Manhattan Series: The two teams have met 86 times previously heading into this weekends three-game set ... Fairfield leads the series 61-25 ... But, Manhattan took 2-of-3 from the Stags last season at Alumni Diamond.
Scouting Manhattan: Manhattan is 14-12 overall and tied with Niagara for first place in the MAAC with a 7-2 record ... Nick Derba leads the team in hitting with a .330 batting average ... Matt Rizzotti is hitting .315 with four homeruns and 22 runs batted in ... As a team, the Jaspers are hitting .253 with 140 runs scored ... The pitching staff has a team 4.58 earned run average.
Around the MAAC: With Easter throwing a monkey wrench into the normal conference schedule, Rider travels to Iona on Friday, also LeMoyne travels to Siena on Friday ... It will conclude on Saturday ... Canisius and Niagara will stick with the normal Saturday-Sunday format ... The Stags and Jaspers, along with St. Peter's and Marist will play Saturday-Monday contests.
