FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Freshman pitcher Rob Gariano (Nutley, N.J.) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Rookie of the Week this afternoon after a stellar outing for the Stags on April 14. The righthander threw a three-hit complete game shutout to help Fairfield to an important 4-0 win over the Gaels.
In his longest outing of the year, Gariano pitched all seven innings in the second game of a doubleheader, striking out six batters while not allowing a walk. He controlled from the start setting down the first seven batters he faced. Gariano closed the game by retiring nine of the last 10 batters he faced.
The rookie is 2-4 on the season with a 4.18 ERA. He leads the team with 29 strikeouts in 32.1 innings of work.
Fairfield is 8-17 on the season and stands fourth in the MAAC with a 6-5 record. The Stags return to action on April 18 at Yale and hit the road for conference play April 21-22 at Canisius.
