This Week - The Stags host Iona College (17-18, 9-7 MAAC) on Wednesday in a pivotal MAAC doubleheader. They will then be off until Saturday when they host Pace in a non-conference twin-bill before traveling to St. Peter's for two on Sunday.
Last Time Out - The Stags swept a MAAC doubleheader from Canisius 3-2 and 5-3 on Sunday. The Stags won the opener on a double steal in the fifth inning. Kevin Toohill (Pompton Plains, NJ) stole second and Sean Easton (Levittown, NY) took home on the throw down. Stag pitcher Steve Colcord (4-4, North Hampton, NH) set down the last six batters in order to hold on for the win. Easton gave the Stags the win in the nightcap with a fourth inning three-run homer, the first of his collegiate career. Ryan Holsten (Wilmington, Del.) got the win improving to 5-0 on the year. Mick Feeley (Glenview, Ill.) earned the save setting down all eight batters he faced to close out the game.
100 Club - On Saturday, the Stags became only the third team in program history to collect 100 stolen bases in a season, joining the 1976 and 1977 teams. They now have 104 in 130 attempts, averaging 2.89 per game. With 12 regular season games left the Stags are on pace to break the 1977 team's record of 118.
Streaking - The Stags have now won five straight games and have won six of their last seven to get to the .500 mark both overall and in the MAAC. It's the second time this year Fairfield has won five in a row.
Who's Hot - In seven games last week, short stop Ed McCrann (Middle Village, NY) batted .435 (10-for-23) with four doubles, a triple, six RBI and scored six runs. He also posted a .696 slugging percentage and a .480 on base percentage. McCrann has raised his batting average to .327, good for third on the team, and leads the Stags with 10 doubles. Mick Feeley also enjoyed an outstanding week and for his efforts was named MAAC South Pitcher of the Week. The senior right hander posted a 1.42 ERA in 12.2 innings pitched, earning a win and a save. Cristian Jung (Brewster, N.Y.) batted .444 (8-for-18) and posted a .542 on base percentage during the seven games.
Stag Leaders - Center fielder Jim Lopusznick (Leonardo, N.J.) continues to lead the Stags in batting average (.360) and on base percentage (.458). Cristian Jung has raised his batting average to .354 and is second on the squad with a .528 slugging percentage. Tom Lopusznick (Leonardo, NJ) holds the team lead in RBI with 31, stolen bases (27-for-30) and a .577 slugging percentage. Dave Catelotti (Adams, Mass.) has lowered his ERA to a team-leading 2.90. In 31 innings, Catelotti has allowed just one extra base hit. Ryan Holsten leads the team with a perfect 5-0 record. Steve Colcord is 4-4 and is second on the team with a 4.25 ERA.
MAAC Facts - The Stags are batting .316 against MAAC opponents this year. Cristian Jung is eating league pitchers up at a .394 (26-for-66) clip to go along with a .682 slugging percentage. Sophomore right hander Steve Colcord has posted a 2.81 ERA in five appearances against MAAC opponents.
Home Sweet Home - While the Stags have struggled for consistency on the road, Alumni Diamond has been kind. In 14 games at home the Stags are 11-3 and have won six straight.
Coach's Corner - Head Coach John Slosar is in his 15th season at the helm of the Stags and carries a career record of 265-300-6 into Wednesday's contests. Before taking over the reigns in 1984, Slosar served as an assistant coach at Fairfield for eight years. All totaled, since coming to Fairfield, Slosar has helped the Stags to one MAAC Championship, four MAAC South titles, six ECAC playoff appearances and nine 20-win seasons. In the last four years, Slosar has led the Stags to three seasons of 20 wins or more and two MAAC South Championships, including the 1997 South crown. For his efforts in 1997, he was named MAAC South Coach of the Year.
