Fairfield, Conn. - Five members of the Fairfield University baseball team received post-season league honors today at the MAAC Tournament awards brunch. Matt Ciardelli (Milford, N.H.) headlined the Stag award winners as he was named to the All-MAAC team as a second baseman. Joe Bruderek (Norristown, Pa.), Steve Colcord (N. Hampton, N.H.), Jeff Hanson (Brewster, Mass.) and Matt McGoldrick (Butler, N.J.) were named to the MAAC All-Adademic team. The All-MAAC team was voted on by the league's 10 head coaches. To be eligible for the All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have completed two semesters, must be a significant starter or reserve and must hold a 3.2 overall GPA.
Ciardelli was one of only three Stags to start every game this season. During the regular season he batted .290 with six home runs, 26 RBI and 13 stolen bases. In the field he posted a .974 fielding percentage, making just seven errors in 231 chances and had a hand in 31 double plays.
Bruderek, a senior pitcher made his third straight appearance on the All-Academic team. Colcord, Hanson and McGoldrick each made their second straight appearance. Colcord, a junior pitcher, was 5-4 during the regular season with a 4.09 ERA, winning five straight decisions. Hanson has started 38 games this year. The senior third baseman posted a .914 fielding percentage. McGoldrick batted .296 in 23 games. A junior outfielder, McGoldrick drove in 11 runs and stole seven bases.
Fairfield finished the regular season at 25-19 overall and 17-8 in MAAC play (third place). Their 25 wins set a new program record for wins in a season, surpassing the old mark of 23. The third seeded Stags will open up the MAAC Tournament on Thursday, May 18, when they face number two Le Moyne at 5:00 p.m. at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y.
