FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Fairfield University baseball team will complete the 2004 regular season, with a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series at Manhattan College in Van Cortlandt Park, in the Bronx.
The two teams will play a double-header on Thursday, May 20 at 12 p.m. Fairfield heads to the Bronx after taking two of three from Saint Peter's, last weekend. Fairfield enters the final series of the season with a 16-24 overall record, and an 11-13 mark in the MAAC, while Manhattan sports a 20-23-1 overall record and are 13-9 in the MAAC.
Fairfield looks to gain some ground in the crowed MAAC standings, with some wins this week.
All-Time Series... The two rivals have met 80 times, with Fairfield holding a 60-20 edge in the long running series. Last year, The Jaspers took two of three from the Stags on the final weekend of the season at Alumni Diamond. The last time the two teams met at Van Cortlandt Park, the Jaspers took the final two games, after Fairfield took a 10-4 game 1 decision.
Quick Hits... Senior Antuan Barnett had a solid series despite being under the weather last week in New Jersey. Barnett batted .461 with a homerun, a double, and nine runs batted in, including six on Saturday. He accounted for 10 of the 24 runs Fairfield scored in the three game series ... Senior Nick Hudyma had a pair of 3-for-5 performances, as he opened the series with three hits and three runs scored on Saturday, and followed it up with a three-hit performance on Sunday, and a run scored ... Senior Andy Lynn went 3-for-4 with five runs scored in the opener, and followed it up with another run scored on Sunday ... Sophomore John Scaife went 4-for-5 on Saturday, with three runs batted in and a run scored ... In the first game at Saint Peter's the Stags scored 16 runs on 25 hits, and for the series they crossed the plate 24times and pounded out 42 hits ... Barnett smacked his team-high sixth homerun of the season on Sunday, with a three-run shot to right field. It was the 20th of his career, and he is two shy of Paul Macchio (1997-2000) for fourth-place on the school's all-time homerun list ... Manhattan's Chris Gaskin is the team's leading hitter with a .361 batting average, and 25 runs batted in and four homeruns ... Matt Cucurullo is hitting .352 with eight homeruns and 41 RBI ... On the hill Josh Santerre is 6-4 with a 5.00 ERA and 54 strikeouts ... Mike Parisi is 3-5 with a 5.35 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 69.0 innings of work this year ... Fairfield has won five MAAC series this season ... As a team Fairfield is batting .262 with 170 runs scored, and 13 runs batted in ... Manhattan is posting a team .293 batting average with 260 runs scored, and 230 runs batted in.
Around the MAAC... With graduations taking place throughout the league this week, the schedule deviates from its Saturday-Sunday format. Action begins on Thursday, when Canisius travels to Niagara, and LeMoyne heads to Siena, along with the Fairfield-Manhattan twin bill. On Friday, the LeMoyne-Siena, and Fairfield-Manhattan series concludes, as Marist and Iona begin. Saint Peter's and Rider meet on Saturday afternoon.
