EDISON, N.J. - Seven Fairfield University baseball players garnered recognition from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), as the conference announced the 2006 MAAC Baseball All-Academic Team. A total of 58 student-athletes comprised the team.

Junior Brian Schappert (Wyckoff, N.J./Saint Joseph's University) led the way with his second appearance on the team, as he was chosen to the team last season. Schappert led the Stags with a .305 batting average this past season. He also led the team with 47 hits, 30 runs scored and 25 walks.

Sophomore Peter Allen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) garnered his first selection to the team. Allen hit .236 with two homeruns and 21 runs batted in. The Mamaroneck, N.Y. native, led the Stags with nine doubles.

Graduate Student Paul DeMarco (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Duke University) is also making his first appearance on the team. DeMarco was tied for the team lead in wins with four in his first season for the Stags after transferring from Duke University.

Sophomore Albie DeSimone (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) had a breakout season for the Stags, as he is also making his first appearance on the team. DeSimone was second on the team with a .296 batting average. He led the team with a .413 on base percentage.

Sophomore Dylan Gandossy (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) appeared in five games for the Stags, pitching nine innings and recording six strikeouts.

Sophomore Matt Kessler (Brewster, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic) pitched in three games for the Stags. In five and one-third innings, he walked four and struck out three batters.

Sophomore Rob McDonnell (Lafayette Hills, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) rounded out the Fairfield contingent.

Fairfield finished the 2006 season with a 16-28 overall record, and a 10-13 mark in the MAAC finishing a respectable sixth place in the final standings.

To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.

Niagara led all schools with nine members named to the team. Manhattan had eight, while the Stags, Iona and Saint Peter's with seven. Canisius added six, and LeMoyne had five. Rider and Siena both had four, and Marist followed with one.
