FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A pair of Fairfield University baseball players will continue to play on the diamond this summer in two NCAA and Major League Baseball sanctioned wood bat leagues. Rising senior Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) and rising sophomore John Glancy (Hinsdale, Ill./Fenwick) will be Fairfield's representatives this summer.
For the second year in a row, Anderson will play for the Jersey Pilots of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL), which fields teams in Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Anderson helped guide the Pilots to an ACBL title in 2004, hitting second on the team with a .289 batting average.
Last summer for the Pilots, he knocked in 14 runners, scored 16 times, and had nine doubles in 37 games. He was stellar in the field with a .968 fielding percentage, while also being a part of 25 of a league-leading 36 double plays.
At the end of the ACBL season, Anderson was named the No. 10 professional prospect in the league by a panel of Baseball America writes and editors.
In his first summer wood bat action, he played for the Monmouth Monarchs of the Atlantic Baseball Confederation Collegiate League (ABCCL). Also, he was a temporary player in the famed Cape Cod League.
This past season for the Stags, the shortstop was named first-team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), after hitting .292 with two homeruns and 27 runs batted in. He was third on the team in hits with 49, while leading the team with 32 runs scored.
On the base paths, Anderson finished third in the MAAC with 16 stolen bases. In the field, Anderson had a .975 fielding percentage, helping the Stags lead the league with a .967 fielding percentage.
Glancy will play for the Carolina Chaos of the Southern Collegiate Baseball League (SCBL). The league is made up of 12 teams from North and South Carolina, and Eastern Tennessee. The league was established in 1999, and plays at least a 38-game schedule, in addition to an All-Star Game, and Playoffs.
In his first collegiate season, Glancy had two pinch hitting at-bats for the Stags. He collected his first collegiate hit, with a run scoring single against VMI on March 7. He also appeared in the nightcap of the Le Moyne doubleheader on April 9, and the series finale against Rider on May 2.
