FAIRFIELD, Conn.--Fairfield University baseball player Doug Anderson (Randolph, N.J./Delbarton) had a very good summer playing for the Jersey Pilots of the wood bat league Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League (ACBL).
On Tuesday, Aug. 10, Anderson and the rest of the Pilots defeated the Stamford Robins, 9-5 to claim the 2004 ABCL Championship. Anderson went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk, as the Pilots used Mike Kolesar who is an infielder, for seven innings of three-hit ball for the Pilots first championship since 1996.
In the first game of the playoffs the Fairfield shortstop had an RBI double to right field in the bottom of the first inning to bring in Kolesar for the games first run against the Quakertown Blazers. However, Quakertown would comeback for the 4-3 win, on Aug. 7.
The next day the Delbarton High School graduate stroked an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning, to help the Pilots to a 3-2 win against the Blazers.
In the Wolff Division Championship Game he was held hitless against the Blazers.
"Doug was the backbone of the infield," Ben Smookler, president and general manger of the Pilots said. "All season long he made several outstanding defensive plays and provided stability in the infield."
Anderson finished the summer second on the team with a .289 batting average, with one homerun and 14 runs batted in. He also scored 16 times, and smacked nine doubles in 37 regular season games for the Pilots.
The Pilots were one of the better defensive teams in the ACBL, as it turned 36 double plays, and registered a .968 fielding percentage. Anderson was a part of 25 double plays, and posted the same .968 fielding percentage as the team, and he had 59 put outs, and 121 assists.
Anderson was the starter for the Wolff Division of the ACBL All-Star Game on July 19 at the Ballpark at St. John's.
For the Stags last spring Anderson batted .279 with four homeruns, and 29 runs batted in. He also led the team with a .381 on-base percentage, and a .435 slugging percentage.
