FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Four Fairfield University baseball players spent most or all of this past summer playing in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). The NECBL is a 12-team summer collegiate baseball league that is home to franchises in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. The NCAA and Major League Baseball sanction the wooden bat league. President Fay Vincent is the former commissioner of Major League Baseball.
Junior-to-be right-handed pitcher Tom Maisano had a solid summer for the Danbury Westerners. He finished the year with a 4-1 record on the hill, and a 1.57 earned run average. In 46.0 inning pitched the 6-foot Long Island native allowed just 11 runs on 31 hits. He recorded a team-high 45 strikeouts, and opposing hitters batted just .189. Maisano was one of eight Danbury players selected to the NECBL All-Star Game, and helped the Westerners to earn a berth in the playoffs.
Maisano was 6-4 for the Stags this past spring with a 4.70 ERA. He led the Stags in strikeouts with 74. Maisano was joined on the Danbury roster by fellow Stag, outfielder Antuan Barnett. Barnett joined the Westerners midway through the season, hitting .222 in 90 at-bats. He had 20 hits, including four doubles, one triple, and one homerun. This past Spring for the Stags, the 6-foot-1 Bronx, NY native hit .262 with seven homeruns, and 29 runs batted in.
Rising junior Nick Hudyma appeared in eight games for the Middletown Giants. The New Britain, Conn. native started four games for the Giants, and had three hits in 15 at-bats. Transfer David Soucy played 14 games for the Giants during the summer.
