FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University baseball Head Coach John Slosar announced today that seniors Dan Breen (Troy, N.Y./Troy), Dewey Raymond (Norwalk, Conn./Trinity Catholic), and John Scaife (Ansonia, Conn./Ansonia) were recently voted by their teammates to serve as captains for the 2006 season.
"They are leaders on and off the field," Slosar said. "It's good to have a pitcher among them, to lead a fairly young and inexperienced pitching staff. It's certainly good to have players, who like the responsibility of being in important game-time situations, as these three players are."
Breen came out of the bullpen for a school-record 22 times last season. He has made 35 appearances during his career. He needs eight more to tie Lou Vigliotti (1992-95), for fifth on the school's all-time list. He earned the first of four saves on the season against Niagara on April 25. Tossing three innings of two-hit ball, to give Fairfield a 6-4, win. He also earned saves against Rider, Iona, and Canisius.
Raymond was the starting third baseman for the Stags in 2005. He's a very solid defensively at third, and can make plays at the hot corner. In his first full seasons with the Stags, the Trinity Catholic graduate hit .263 with two homeruns and 17 runs batted in. He started 40-of-43 games for the Stags last year, pounding out 36 hits and scoring 24 runs. As a sophomore, he went 4-for-8 with two doubles and three runs in two games.
Scaife had a solid 2005 season for the Stags, as he anchored the infield at first. He batted .304 and belted seven homeruns. Scaife was fifth in the MAAC in runs batted in with 47, and led the team with 51 hits. He also led the team in total bases with 83, as he posted a team-best .494 slugging percentage. The Ansonia High School graduate also led the team with 15 multiple-hit games and 13 multiple-RBI contests.
Fairfield opens the 2006 season with a three-game series at James Madison University, February 24-26.
