FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Fairfield University baseball Head Coach John Slosar announced the 2005 schedule on Tuesday afternoon. The slate will include five teams who took part in the NCAA Tournament a year ago, and teams from some of the top conferences in the Nation.
The 2005 campaign begins with an eight-game trip to Virginia, beginning on Saturday, March 5 at Virginia Commonwealth. Fairfield and VCU will play a three-game series at the Petersburg Sports Complex. The series wraps up with single-nine inning games on March 6 and 7.
Following the three-game set with VCU, the Stags will stay in Virginia with a nine-inning game at Liberty University on March 9, at 3 p.m. The next day, Fairfield will face another Big South conference member, with a tilt at Radford University.
Then, Fairfield will open a three-game series, with an NCAA Tournament participant from a year ago, George Mason, March 12-13. Last year George Mason went 39-17 in the regular season, and earned a berth into the NCAA's.
Next up for the Stags is the Villanova Baseball Bash, the weekend of March 18-20. The event will begin on Friday, March 18 against the Wildcats in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. The next day, Fairfield will take on another Big 5 opponent with a visit to St. Joseph's. The Stags will wrap up its trip to the Philadelphia area on Sunday, visiting Temple.
After returning from Virginia and Philadelphia, the Stags will have non-conference road games against St. John's (3/22), Central Connecticut State (3/29), Hartford (4/5), Fordham (4/12), Connecticut (4/19), a doubleheader at Yale (4/20), and Army (4/26).
Fairfield will welcome CCSU (3/23), Albany (4/6), Rhode Island (4/13), and Fordham (4/27), in non-conference action at Alumni Diamond this spring.
The Stags will begin the 27-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule with a three-game series at Marist College on March 26. The Stags and the Red Foxes are scheduled to play a twin bill on March 26, then a single nine-inning game following the Easter holiday on March 26.
Fairfield's next MAAC series comes at home against Saint Peter's College, April 2-3. The Stags will play Siena (4/16-17), Niagara (4/23-24), Iona (5/7-8), and Manhattan (5/19-20) at Alumni Diamond this season. The Stags will play three-game sets at LeMoyne, Rider, and Canisius.
