RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- Herbie Allen tallied his first career double double with 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Fairfield University men's basketball team to a 66-61 win over Manhattan College on the road. With the win, Fairfield guaranteed itself a winning road record in conference play, holding a 5-3 mark.
Manhattan jumped out to a 3-0 lead on its first possession when Laurence Jolicoeur hit a three-point shot. The Stags tallied the next six points to take the lead at 6-3, courtesy of a three pointer by Yorel Hawkins and a three-point play by Greg Nero. The Stags held onto the lead until Antoine Pearson's layup pushed the Jaspers in front, 13-11. Back-to-back three-point shots by Mike Evanovich and Herbie Allen and a pair of free throws by Warren Edney gave the Stags their biggest lead at 19-13 with 11:03 on the clock.
The Jaspers fought back with an 8-2 run to tie the score at 21-21, the tying basket coming on Darryl Crawford's three pointer. Edney regained the lead for Fairfield with a three-point basket with 7:55 remaining, but it would the last basket scored by the Stags for the rest of the half. Manhattan was not able to mount much offense either in the closing minutes, just enough to secure a 28-27 half time lead.
The home team came out shooting long-range jumpers to start the second half, as the Jaspers hit four three-point shots in the opening six minutes. Those baskets enabled Manhattan to build a 12-point lead at 47-35 following Chris Smith's three pointer with 13:38 remaining.
On Manhattan's next possession, Mamadou Diakhate drew an offensive foul on Devon Austin which was the junior's fourth foul. That play changed the game's momentum and sparked a 16-4 run over the next six minutes, tying the score at 51-51 with 7:13 on the clock. Allen tallied seven points during the run, including a four-point play at the 11:49 mark.
Evanovich broke the tie with a three-point shot at the 5:20 mark, pushing the Stags in front at 54-51. Fairfield would not trail again, leading by as many as six points. Manhattan came closest at 62-61 with 47 seconds remaining, but a pair of free throws by Han and Diakhate iced the game in the closing seconds.
Four Fairfield starters reached double figures, namely Allen, Evanovich (12 points), Nero (10 points), and Han (10 points). Austin led all Manhattan scorers with 12 points, all of which came in the second half.
