Stags Come Up Short At Marist In 77-70 Setback
Jan 13, 2008
POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Guard Herbie Allen led all Fairfield scorers with 19 points in a 77-70 road loss to Marist College on Sunday afternoon. It marked the second straight game that Allen was the team's top scorer, coming off a career-high 23 points against Loyola on January 11.
Marist used two scoring streaks to take command of the game, beginning with a 10-0 run in the first three minutes which included two three-point baskets. Fairfield answered with a pair of field goals, one from Geoff Middleton and another from Warren Edney to make the score 10-4.
The Red Foxes responded with eight points in just over a minute to blow the lead into a 14-point advantage at 18-4 with 13:45 remaining in the half. The home team would hold only one lead that was larger at 35-20, but it was at that point that the half took a turn in the Stags favor.
Fairfield's defense clamped down on the Marist offense and held it scoreless for the final 4:12 of the half, while the Stags put together a 13-0 string that was powered by three three-point possessions in a row. The first came off a Herbie Allen three-point shot, followed by Anthony Johnson's tradition three-point play and a three pointer from Marty O'Sullivan. The streak ended with an O'Sullivan layup and two free throws from Allen to make the score 35-31 at intermission. Eight different Fairfield players scored in the half, led by Allen's seven points.
Fairfield kept the momentum at the start of the second half, as Anthony Johnson was fouled on a dunk that sent him to the line with a chance to give Fairfield its first lead. The sophomore did not disappoint and made the free throw to push Fairfield in front at 36-35. Marist regained the lead when Louie McCroskey drove to the basket for a lay up. But Warren Edney quickly regained the lead for Fairfield with a jumper at the 18:24 mark for a 38-37 advantage.
Marist scored the next 15 points over the next five minutes to regain control of the game at 52-38 with 13:15 on the clock. The Stags put together one last surge and cut the lead to four points at 59-55 after a lay up by Mike Evanovich. The Red Foxes secured another double digit lead soon after Corey Bauer and Jay Gavin hit three-point shots on consecutive possessions to make the score 65-55 with 5:44 remaining.
The Stags return to action on Friday, January 18 when they travel to Iona College for a MAAC match up.
