Stags Play The Percentages In 70-51 Win Over Canisius
Jan 25, 2008
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Basketball is a game of percentages, and all the percentages went the Stags' way on Friday night as the Fairfield University men's basketball team posted a 70-51 win over Canisius College at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
The Fairfield defense held the Golden Griffs to 27 percent shooting from the floor, while the offense shot 71 percent from three-point range, courtesy of Jonathan Han's perfect night. The guard made all five of his field goal attempts, including four from behind the three-point arc, and both free throws for a team-high 16 points. He also dished off seven assists and registered six steals.
The Stags never trailed in this game, to an 11-3 lead in the first six minutes of the game. The eight-point advantage quickly doubled over the next six minutes, giving the home team a 16-point lead at 22-6 with 7:39 remaining in the first half. Fairfield scored 15 of its first 22 points from three-point territory, as five different players made a long-range shot in that run.
The Golden Griffs fought back late in the half, cutting the deficit under 10 points at 26-17 with 2:03 left on the clock. Fairfield answered with the final five points of the half, all coming from the hand of Han.
Canisius opened the second half with four points to pull within 10 points at 31-21, but once again Han squashed the come back try with a three-pointer and a perfect pass that resulted in an Anthony Johnson dunk. Fairfield's 5-0 spurt started a 15-4 run that gave the Stags their biggest lead of the game at 21 points, 46-25.
With just over nine minutes to go, Fairfield still held a commanding lead at 51-29, but once again the Golden Griffs showed resolve and fought their way back into contention. But even with that showing late in the half, Canisius could not come any closer than 11 points, which occurred at the 3:24 mark, 57-46.
Herbie Allen and Anthony Johnson also reached double figures for the Stags with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Yorel Hawkins just missed a double double with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.
Frank Turner was the only Griff to reach double digits in the scoring column, finishing the game with 17 points.
Fairfield completes its weekend with a home game against Niagara University on Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The men will play the first game of the twinbill at 1 pm, followed by the women's game against Iona at 3:30 pm.
