Han's Late Surge Lifts Fairfield To 60-51 Win Over Drexel In BracketBuster Game
Feb 23, 2008
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Jonathan Han tallied a team-high 13 points, including seven of the Stags' final 13 points, to lead the Fairfield University men's basketball team to its sixth straight victory, a 60-51 decision over Drexel University in a O'Reilly's BracketBuster game.
The Stags jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the opening minutes behind a three-point shot by Herbie Allen, and a pair of free throws by Marty O'Sullivan. The Dragons answered with five straight points off a three pointer by Traymayne Hawthorne and a jumper by Frank Elegar to give the team it's only lead of the half at 7-5. The two baskets were Hawthrone's and Elegar's only points of the half, as the Stags kept Drexel's top two scores off stride for the opening 20 minutes.
Fairfield answered with a 9-0 run that gave the team a seven-point advantage at 14-7, courtesy of four points by Greg Nero and another three-point basket by Allen. Drexel eventually tied the game with a 7-0 spurt that made the score 14-14, but back-to-back three-point shots by Nero and Evanovich pushed the Stags back in front at 20-14. Drexel cut into that lead by halftime, pulling within four points at 27-23.
Drexel came out quickly in the second half and cut the lead in half at 31-29 with 17:25 remaining in the game. Once again, the Stags used the three-point shot to keep Drexel at arm's length as Jonathan Han and Warren Edney hit long-range jumpers on consecutive possessions to make the lead eight points, 37-29. O'Sullivan added a lay up in the 8-0 run to give the Stags their biggest lead at 39-29.
The Dragons were able to slowly cut into the Fairfield lead though, as the Stags managed just one basket over the next 10 minutes - a lay up by Nero at the 10-minute mark. Before Fairfield netted another basket, the home team managed to cut the double-digit deficit to three points at 44-41 with eight minutes remaining.
An O'Sullivan free throw and a driving lay up by Han doubled Fairfield advantage to six points at 47-41 with 6:30 on the clock, but five straight points by Drexel cut the advantage to one point at 47-46. Anthony Johnson's dunk pushed the lead back to three points on the Stags' next possession, but the Dragons answered with Randy Oveneke's lay up to make the score 49-48.
Allen took some of the pressure off of Fairfield with his jumper in the paint for a three-point lead. The Stags received further breathing room when Han stole the ball at mid court and went in for a lay up to make the score 53-48. Han continued to make the margin larger with a jumper and a pair of free throws for an eight-point lead at 57-49.
Nero came off the bench to score 12 points, and grabbed a team co-leading eight rebounds. O'Sullivan added nine points and eight rebounds to the Stags cause, while Allen also reached double figures with 10 points.
Oveneke led all Drexel scorers with 12 points, while team leading scorer Frank Elegar was held to just nine points in 22 minutes.
Fairfield returns to action on Friday, February 29 when it hosts Manhattan College for the final home game of the season. Tip-off time is slated for 7:30 at the Arena at Harbor Yard.
