Stags Nearly Upset #5 Georgetown Before Falling 61-49
Dec 1, 2007
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Jonathan Han scored a game-high 17 points, while Yorel Hawkins added 11 points as the Stags nearly upset fifth-ranked Georgetown University, falling to the Hoyas by a 61-49 count at the Verizon Center. Fairfield was tied with its Big East foe at halftime and trailed by only four points in the final three minutes.
The Stags played near-flawless basketball, recording only four turnovers in the game. The team committed two turnovers in each half, with one of the team's second-half turnovers coming off a shot-clock violation. Georgetown also protected the basketball with just eight turnovers.
Fairfield overcame an early deficit to tie the game twice at 11-11 and 14-14 in the first seven-plus minutes of the game. After Han's three-point basket tied the game for the second time, Greg Nero pushed Fairfield in front for the first time with a three pointer at the 11:45 mark to make the score 17-14.
The Stags remained in the lead for the next five minutes before Jonathan Wallace's layup tied the score for the third time at 22-22. Georgetown built a six-point lead over the next few minutes before back-to-backc three pointers by Han and Sean Grzeck tied the score at 31-31 with 1:19 on the clock. Patrick Ewing's dunk pushed the home team in front before Mike Evanovich tied the game with a layup as time expired, tying the score at 33-33.
Neither team scored in the opening 2:30 of the second half, keeping the score tied. Ewing made one of two free throws to give Georgetown a slight edge at 34-33. Marty O'Sullivan's layup on the next possession gave Fairfield the lead at 35-34, a lead which stood for two minutes until Roy Hibbert's layup gave the Hoyas a 36-35 advantage.
Georgetown gained a little breathing room when Jonathan Wallace hit a three-point basket to make the score 39-35. Once again, Fairfield fought back with a quick spurt that resulted in the sixth time of the game. A pair of Nero free throws and a jumper by Yorel Hawkins was the difference for Fairfield.
Wallace hit another three-point basket to stop the run and put the Hoyas in front at 42-39. The Stags never tied the game from that point, but did pull with in a point at 45-44 when Han hit a three-point shot with 6:41 remaining. Fairfield was still close at 52-48 with 3:21 on the clock, but the Hoyas took advantage of the Stags' need to stop the clock by fouling. Georgetown ended the game with a 9-1 run to push the lead to double figures for the only time in the game.
DaJuan Summers led all Georgetown scorers with 16 points, while Wallace finished with 13 markers. Roy Hibbert was held in check with seven points, seven rebounds, and one blocked shot.
