Jan 10, 2008
Fairfield University (5-9 overall, 3-1 MAAC) returns home for the first time in three weeks by hosting Loyola College at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm. The team comes off a successful road trip that saw it win three of four games, all the victories coming against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opponents. The Stags come off a thrilling 53-52 win against Siena College on Tuesday night behind a 10-point, eight-rebound evening from Greg Nero. Fairfield shut down the conference's top offensive team, holding Siena to 27 points under its season scoring average (79.4 ppg). Nero kept his season scoring average at 10.0 points per game, one of two Fairfield double-digit scorers. Jonathan Han saw his four-game streak of scoring in double figures end with three points against the Saints. He remains the team's top scorer with an 11.7 scoring average. After tonight, the schedule sends Fairfield back on the road for a pair of games, heading to Marist on Sunday and Iona on January 18.
Loyola College (6-9 overall, 2-2 MAAC) comes off a 90-60 loss to third-ranked University of Kansas, the team's fourth loss over the last five games. The Greyhounds have played a very challenging schedule this year, playing road games against Seton Hall (10-5), Illinois (8-7), and Kansas (15-0). The team posted a 63-51 win over Iona College in its last MAAC outing at home, improving the team's record to 5-1 at Reitz Arena. Gerald Brown was the team's top scorer in each of the last two games, netting 16 against Iona and 13 at Kansas. He leads the team in scoring at 18.7 points per game, which places him third in the MAAC. He is one of two Loyola players scoring in double figures, joining Marquis Sullivan (11.5 ppg). Sullivan netted a team-high 16 points in last Friday's game against Fairfield, the most he's scored since tallying a career-high 27 points against Vermont earlier this year.
