BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Herbie Allen established a career-high with 23 points in the men's basketball team's 67-63 loss to Loyola College at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The result marked Fairfield's fifth home loss of the season, and second in MAAC play.

Allen played a pivotal role in keeping the Stags in the game throughout the night, often hitting shots in key moments to allow the home team to stay with its opponent. He netted 17 points in the second half, and made eight of 13 shots from the floor overall in his best single-game performance.

The guard scored all of his first-half points in the opening eight minutes, netting six of the team's 11 points to that point which kept the Stags close. After his third basket of the game, Fairfield trailed by a point at 12-11. Fairfield went on an 8-3 run from that point to take its biggest lead of the game at 19-15 with 6:34 remaining in the half. Marty O'Sullivan's three-point basket at the 8:32 mark started the run, which proved to be significant.

O'Sullivan's basket was the last hoop scored by the Stags' offense in the first half, as they tallied their final seven points from the free throw line. Fairfield's inability to put the ball in the basket enabled Loyola to finish the half with a 14-2 run that turned that four-point deficit into a seven-point half time lead at 28-21.

Fairfield started the second half with a quick spurt that cut the lead to four points at 30-26. However, Gerald Brown scored off a driving layup to push the advantage back to six points, a trend that would continue throughout the night. For example, Fairfield cut the lead to three points when Devin Johnson made one of two free throws, but Brett Harvey nailed a three-point shot to make it six points again, 37-31 with 13:39 on the clock.

Loyola continued to build on that lead until it reached double figures at 53-42 with 7:02 remaining. Just as it did in Baltimore one week ago, Fairfield slowly chipped away at the Loyola double-digit lead until the lead dwindled to three points at 58-56 with 3:12 remaining. Allen netted the final seven points of that 14-5 run. Once again, Loyola answered Fairfield's run with a three-point goal, this time Brian Rudolph tossed in a three-point shot with 2:53 remaining to send the lead back to five points, 61-56.

Fairfield pulled within two points once again at 63-61 after Jonathan Han connected from beyond the arc with 1:13 left on the clock. With 31 seconds remaining, Harvey attempted a shot from the corner which bounced off the rim. However, Fairfield was whistled for a foul on the shot which sent Harvey to the line for three shots. He connected on two of the three attempts to make the score 65-61.

Han quickly cut that lead in half by racing the length of the court and floating a one-handed shot into the basket for a 65-63 score. Marquis Sullivan was fouled with six seconds left, and the guard sealed the game by making both free throws.

Fairfield's top three scorers - Han, Nero, and Anthony Johnson - combined for four field goals in 15 attempts. The trio tallied 21 points in the game, but 10 of those markers came from the free throw line.

Harvey finished the game with a career-high 20 points, while Brown tallied 19 points for the Greyhounds. Han scored all nine of his points in the second half. Mike Evanovich, who netted 20 points against the Greyhounds last week, was held to six points and only four field goal attempts.

Fairfield returns to action on Sunday when it returns to the road for a game against Marist College. Game time is slated for 4 pm.
