
Second-Half Come Back Falls Short In 64-59 Setback To Loyola In MAAC Tourney Quarterfinals

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The men's basketball nearly erased an 18-point second-half deficit, coming within a pair of points of completing the come back, but still came up short to Loyola College by a 64-59 count in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) quarterfinals at the Times Union Center.
The Stags jumped out to an early lead at 5-2 behind a three pointer by Marty O'Sullivan and a pair of free throws from Anthony Johnson. The Greyhounds used a quick 9-3 run to take the lead by three points at 11-8, and would never trail in this game from that point.
Fairfield hung close with the fourth-seeded Greyhounds traling by only a point with 5:39 remaining in the first half at 22-21. However, the Stags would not score the rest of the half, which allowed Loyola to close out the opening period with a 12-0 run that gave it control of the game at 34-21 by intermission.
Loyola continued to build upon its lead early in the second half by starting with a 10-5 spurt that pushed the advantage to its largest point at 18 points, 44-26. But as the Stags have done all season long, they put together a vailant second-half effort that put them right back into the game. The Stags used an 11-0 run over the next three minutes to make the score 44-37 with 14:12 on the clock. Herbie Allen tallied five points, while Mamadou Diakhate and Warren Edney each added a three-point shot in the run.
The Greyhounds pushed the lead back to double figures at 48-38 withh 12:45 remaining, but the Stags had yet another run in them. The Stags scored 10 of the next 11 points to pull with a pair of points, 50-48. After getting a defensive stop, Fairfield had a chance to take the lead but Mike Evanovich's three-point shot ticked off the rim. Geroald Brown came down the court and nailed a three pointer to give Loyola a five-point lead.
With two minutes remaining, Fairfield pulled to within three points after Han found Johnson with an alley oop pass for a dunk which made the score 62-59. But the Stags would not score again, resulting in a season-ending loss.
Edney was the only other Fairfield player in double figures, scoring 11 points for the Stags. Brown led all scorers with 18 points, while Brett Harvey added 16 markers and Michael Tuck tallied 14 points for the Greyhounds.
