
Men's Basketball Wins Seventh Straight With 83-71 Decision Over Manhattan

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Jonathan Han scored a game-high 21 points, 18 of which came in the second half, to lift the Fairfield University men's basketball team to an 83-71 win over Manhattan College at the Arena at Harbor Yard. The Stags posted their seventh straight win to even up their record at 14-14 overall and 11-6 in the MAAC.
Four Fairfield players reached double figures, including 15 points each from Anthony Johnson and Herbie Allen. Mike Evanovich came off the bench to add 11 points.
Fairfield led through most of the first half, holding a six-point advantage at 19-13 with 10:51 on the clock. The Jaspers fought back with a 9-2 spurt that pushed the visitors in front at 22-21, their first lead since a 2-0 edge on the opening possession. Manhattan secured a four-point advantage with 2:38 remaining, but the Stags battled back to tie the game at 29-29 off Marty O'Sullivan's lay up.
Darryl Crawford netted a three-point basket with four seconds remaining, giving the Jaspers a 32-29 lead at halftime. Allen netted a three-point shot to open the second half, making the score 32-32. Manhattan went on a 7-2 run to push its lead back to five points at the 16:21 mark.
The Stags came back with its own run, an 8-0 string that put the home team in front at 44-41 with 14 minutes left in the second half. Manhattan made one last run at the Stags and took a 49-47 lead at the 11 minute mark, but Fairfield put the game away with a 12-1 spurt to make the score with 59-50 with 7:42 remaining.
Chris Smith led the Manhattan attack with 21 points, 16 of which came in the first half. Devon Austin and Antoine Pearson netted 14 and 11 points for the Jaspers, respectively.
Fairfield senior Joe Bajda tallied a pair of free throws in the closing minute to tally his first career points.
The Stags conclude the regular season when they travel to Rider University on Sunday, March 2. Game time is slated for 2 pm. The game will be televised in Connecticut on the Cablevision system and on WZBN Channel 25 in New Jersey.
